Bob Wiseman - author - reviewerMike Blakely has gathered over 50 wild and funny short tales about early Texas. If you like campfire ditties
you'll love this book. If you hunt you'll laugh at the antics in this book.
As is true with all retold real-live-happenings Blakely's stories

all, Rip Van Winkle slept for 20 years (ahem). And if you're living
in Texas (or anywhere, for that matter) More Wild Camp Tales

that is! It's funny, it's serious, it's a good read...Bob Wiseman 9/96

"My Husband's Trying to Kill Me!": A True Story of Money, Marriage, and Murderous Intent
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (September, 1992)
Average review score:

Why women should be nun's!Well not really. But at least read this book in case. This book is about a woman who's husband hired a hitman to kill her but the story takes a weird turn when the hitman hired somebody else to do the dirty work who just so happens to be a undercover cop. Amazingly enough this book is actually really funny at times but you are going to have to read it yourself to find out why. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good mystery.

My Texas Family, An Uncommon Journey to Prosperity
Published in Hardcover by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (2000)
Average review score:

Visual History Meets Oral HistoryFamily history takes on new meaning in Rick and Ronda Hyman's "My Texas Family: An Uncommon Journey to Prosperity." Inspired by a collection of 300 black and white photos from the early 1900s, Rick Hyman has taken on the task of painting each photo, not as a reproduction, but as a representation of the family he has known and whose history he has heard from childhood. With his wife Ronda, he has compiled the family history in this book, using some of the photos and paintings. This history, however, is more than Rick Hyman's family history. It is a slice of history that coincides with the Harlem Renaissance. But it is not a history of finery, furs, and fancy clubs. It is a history of prosperity that takes place far from the lights of Harlem, in the heat of the South, where former slaves took opportunity by the horns and carved out a niche of success on their Texas land.

The Mythology of the Wichita
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (October, 1995)
Average review score:

A Rich MythologyThe myths of the Wichita are a mythic interpretation of the Place where the present-day city of Wichita stands, but they also are an important link to the world-wide mythologies of ancient times. They both offer an insight into the spiritual meaning of this Place, and have the potential for helping mythographers to understand where Native American myths fit into the larger picture of ancient culture. The ethnographer, Dorsey, has a genuine understanding of the Wichita and of the need to transmit their legends accurately and with a cultural context.

National Geographic Driving Guide to America, Texas
Published in Paperback by National Geographic (01 February, 1999)
Average review score:

Truly UsefulFollowing a series of recommended drives throughout the Middle South from west to east, this compact little book provides an excellent listing of sights (including brief descriptions) that a reasonably intelligent reader might enjoy. I read it with highlighter in hand, marking the sights that appealed to me, an approach I recommend to others.
Mr. White appears to be an active bird-watcher (he apparently has written other books on that subject). Readers who share that interest will find this book particularly interesting, since he highlights the best bird-watching spots along the Gulf Coast.

The Neck of the Bottle: George W. Goethals and the Reorganization of the U.S. Army Supply System, 1917-1918 (Texas A&m University Military History S)
Published in Hardcover by Texas A&M University Press (December, 1992)
Average review score:

A must for anyone interested in military history.Zimmerman unravels this complex situation thoughtfully and thoroughly. She intelligently places Goethals in his acccurate historical context. A great book.
Organized regionally around the major cities, the Texas Handbook also includes numerous towns and sights of interest in the surrounding vicinity and places between. It does a remarkably good job of covering such a large state.
Hopefully a new addition is in the works. Because it was published in 1998, most prices will be out-of-date, but it's so easy to now get hours & admission via web sites, that it's not that big of a problem once you've used the handbook to identify all the interesting places you want to visit.
